Spiritual direction is the art of examining your life for the energy, presence
and movement of God. It is “a long, loving look at the real.”
A spiritual director assists a “directee” in that look. A good
director will also provide support and prayer along the way.
Individuals as well as groups, organizations and institutional boards are
now seeking spiritual direction. In this age when people who may not be religious describe themselves as deeply spiritual,
the practice of spiritual direction has expanded to include anyone who seeks greater awareness and receptivity to the Spirit
that created us.
For Christians, spiritual direction is an ancient discipline. When the church
was only a few hundred years old, people seeking wisdom would trek to the desert to meet with renown holy men who had sequestered
themselves in caves (to reduce distractions). Few of us work in caves any more….and many of us are women!
This practice of seeking God’s activity in our lives is experiencing
a revival in the Christian tradition. Within Protestantism, it is more of a first-time surge of energy. I graduated from one
of the few Protestant seminaries to train spiritual directors, San Francisco Theological Seminary's Diploma in the Art of
Spiritual Direction.
