OVERVIEWStewart B. Whitney, Ph.D., Professor and Chair of Sociology and Director of the Space Settlement Studies Project, is a social psychologist specializing in interpersonal relations. Dr. Whitney is an internationally recognized expert on the social aspects of expeditions and long-term manned missions of sea and space exploration. He has investigated the relationship between interpersonal compatibility and stress as well as crew cohesiveness. Dr. Whitney received his Ph.D. degree in sociology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. In addition, he completed postgraduate study at the Center for Alcohol Studies at Rutgers University and in Family Life Education at the University of Minnesota. He received certification in family therapy (CFLE) from the National Council on Family Relations, certification in sex therapy and clinical supervision (FAACS) from the American Board of Sexology at Cornell University Medical School, certifications in sociological practice (CSP) from the American Sociological Association, and Diplomate Status in behavioral medicine (FBCM) from the International Academy of Medicine, at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Whitney is an active researcher in the area of inter-personal relations, has published nine books and numerous articles in national and international journals, has received government and foundation research grants, and has been an active consultant. His books include Phenylketonuria (with Robert Guthrie), Anomie and Radicalization, Space Journal, Stress Busters (with Joan Conti), Student Revolt, The Anatomy of Desperation, and Space Settlement Papers. In addition, he has presented papers and lectured extensively throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East. Dr. Whitney has conducted research expeditions to study the Arctic Inuit, the Caribbean Cuna, and the African Mbuti; conducted research on children and adolescents; is a founding member of the National Space Society and a founding sponsor of the Challenger Center; and has served on the faculties of Antioch College, Ithaca College, Rutgers University, and SUNY at Buffalo. Currently he is Adjunct Research Professor at SUNY at Buffalo. Dr. Whitney co-founded the Space Settlement Studies Project in 1977. In 1980 he chaired the session on space colonization at the First Global Conference on the Future. Currently, he is editor of Extraterrestrial Society and Space Journal, consultant and education program director for Sea Planet Odyssey, a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Council of the Robert Heinlein Expeditions where he serves as Expeditions Science Advisor and Team Leader in Crew Psychology, a member of the Board of Regents of United Societies in Space, and academic advisor for the Black Family Studies Program. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the National Council on Family Relations for his work with families and from the National Wildlife Federation for his work with Wolf Conservancy. He was selected third educator in space by NASA before the loss of Challenger. Dr. Whitney is an experienced researcher of the ethnography of small scale society. He has traveled extensively, is a wildlife enthusiast, has raised wolves, been a professional sled-dog racer, and is a founding member of Wolf Sanctuary. He is married to Noel Conti, a clinical psychotherapist. They live in Buffalo, New York and on Seneca Lake.
