Notes:

  1. This system attempts to keep the beginning of the Martian month in synchronization with the beginning of the Earth month. This is done by inserting an embolismic month four times in a seven-year cycle, plus a leap day every 49 years. There are 1106 months in 49 Martian years, and a total of 32,761 Martian days, so that the mean length of the Martian month is 29.62166 Martian days. However, the average length of an Earth month is 30.43688 days (365.2425 days / 12 months per year), which is equal to 29.62252 Martian days. Due to this discrepancy, every 32.6 Martian years the Martian month would advance one day relative to the Earth month.

  2. The months Messidor and Brumaire are omitted in common years, while Fructidor is omitted in embolismic years. The zodiacal months begin with Aries, in keeping with the convention on Earth, and are not synchonized with the passage of the sun through these constellations.
