Alaska

Mountain Club of Alaska--owns and maintains 8 backcountry huts in the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains. These rustic huts sleep 8-10 and are located above the treeline near glaicers.

Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge--a diverse adventure/eco-tour destination as well as a place to relax and enjoy the wilderness. Randi Iverson, owner. Web site is http://www.sadiecove.com

California

BaseCamp Lodge--BaseCamp in Bear Valley, CA is owned and operated by Mountain Adventure Seminars, a year-round guiding service. BaseCamp offers skiers, hikers, and climbers an inexpensive yet comfortable, friendly, and welcoming place to stay while recreating in Bear Valley.

Bucks Lake Lodge--Ken and Dixie Nelson, P.O. Box 1476, Quincy, CA 95971, phone: (530) 283-2262. The lodge is located on Bucks Lake, near Quincy. The turnoff to Bucks Lake Road is just north of Quincy on Highway 70. The turnoff is well marked. In the winter, it is a 4.5 mile ski or snowmobile ride on a groomed road. The food is excellent.

Bucks Lakeshore Lodge (Resort)--P.O. Box 338, Meadow Valley, CA 95956, phone: (530) 283-6900. As the name implies, the lodge is located on the edge of Bucks Lake. The turnoff to Bucks Lake Road is just north of Quincy on Highway 70. In the winter, it is a 3.5 mile ski or snowmobile ride into the lodge on a groomed road. They are willing to bring your gear in on a snowmobile.

Camp Richardson Resort--located near South Lake Tahoe, CA, phone: (800) 766-4670. Historic Camp Richardson is located on Highway 89, north of South Lake Tahoe on the way to Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe.

Clair Tappaan Lodge--19940 Donner Pass Road (Old Highway 40), P.O. Box 36, Norden, CA 95724, phone: (530) 426-3632. The Sierra Club also maintains four backcountry huts in the Donner Pass/Lake Tahoe area. Each hut is about a day's journey from various roadheads. The Peter Grubb, Benson, Bradley and Ludlow huts are rustic shelters with wood burning stoves. Bring your own food, supplies and sleeping bag. Make reservations through the Clair Tappaan Lodge.

Coopins Meadow Lodge--Don and Jacque Stinek, P.O. Box 294, Sierraville, CA, 96126, cellular phone: (530) 837-3104. Drive to Little Truckee Summit on Highway 89. Little Truckee Summit is about 15 miles north of Truckee and about 9 miles south of Sierraville. In the winter, ski or snowmobile the 9 miles on a groomed, level trail to this beautiful lodge. Don is very willing to bring in your gear by snowmobile. This is first class accommodations with great meals that are included in the price of your stay.

Meiss Ski Hut--owned by Dave Beck and friends. This historic, backcountry structure is located near Carson Pass (Highway 88) and Kirkwood, CA. It takes a couple of hours to ski into the hut.

Pear Lake Hut--the finest wilderness hut in the Sierra Nevada in prime backcountry ski terrain. Located at 9,200 feet in Sequoia National Park. Sleeps 10 and is available for winter use only.

Rock Creek Winter Lodge--Route 1, Box 12, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, phone: (760) 935-4170. It is a two mile ski to the lodge on a groomed road. They groom the Rock Creek Road three more miles to the wilderness boundary where the backcountry skiing starts to get good.

Sorensen's Resort--located east of the intersection of Highway 88 and 89, 14255 Highway 88, Hope Valley, CA, 96120, phone: (800) 423-9949 or (530) 694-2203. Located in the heart of beautiful Hope Valley at 7,000 feet, south of Lake Tahoe.

Tamarack Lodge--P.O. Box 69, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, phone: (760) 934-2442. At the end of the plowed Lake Mary road west of Mammoth Lakes. Great cross-country skiing at your door step with great views of Banner, Ritter and the Minarets from the top of the ridge.

Tioga Pass Resort--located on the Tioga Pass Road just east of Tioga Pass, P.O. Box 307, Lee Vinning, CA 93541, phone (209) 372-4471 (October 15 through May 1, each year). In the heart of magnificint backcountry skiing in Yosemite. Depending on the snow line, it is a 3-6 mile ski into the lodge in the winter. When the Tioga Road opens in the spring, drive to the resort.

Alpine Club of Canada--The club operates an extensive system of 24 backcountry climbing and ski huts in Alberta and B.C. The huts range from remote bivi-shelters to log cabins. Reservations are required at all huts. E-mail: info@alpineclubofcanada.ca

Baldface Lodge Snowcat Skiing--Snowcat accessed powder skiing tours in Nelson, BC. Packages inlcude all meals, skiing and accommodations.

Durrand Glacier Chalet and Mt. Moloch Chalet--located northeast of Revelstoke, B.C. in the northern Selkirk Mountains. Hut to hut skiing. Operated by Silkirk Mountain Experience. Kootenay Mountain Huts, Flint Lakes Cabin--located 20 km north of the Kokanee Glacier in the West Kootenays. Capacity--8. Access--Helicopter in, ski out. Ski Season--Mid-December to end of April.

Kootenay Mountain Huts, Valhalla Lodge--located northwest of Nelson, BC, in the Valhalla Mountain Range. Capacity--10. Access--Helicopter. Ski Season--Mid-December to end of April.

Lake O'Hara Lodge--located in the southern half of Yoho National Park. Lake O'Hara is one of the most picturesque alpine areas in North America.Capacity--16. North Rockies Ski Tours--located in the Dezaiko Range northeast of Prince George where powder skiing is the rule. A well-appointed two-storey lodge is situated at treeline. Capacity--8. Access--15-minute helicopter ride. Ski Season--January to April. E-mail: nrst@mag-net.com

Powder Creek Lodge--located 18 km east of the small village of Kaslo in southern British Columba in the Purcell Range. Access is via an eleven minute helicopter ride. The web site has great photos of the ski terrain.

Powder Mountain Lakeside Lodge--Whistler's first heli-access backcountry inn at the Mad River Nordic Centre.Capacity--10. Access--year-round via helicopter from Whistler or snowcat or skiing (15 km). Ski Season--December to May. E-mail: madriver@whistler.net

Colorado

Hidden Treasure Yurt--sleeps 8 and is located on New York Mountain at 11,200 feet. North facing ski slopes for intermediate - advanced backcountry skiers. Nicely treed ski slopes provide consistent powder snow safe from avalanches. Mountaineers can summit the top of New York Mountain (12,550 feet) in less than 2 hrs from the yurt.
