Is Hell Hot (exothermic...or Cold (endothermic)??
hellhot.htm
I do not know the truth of this article (presented here a bit edited by me), but it is a nice story.
note: exothermic means giving off heat; endothermic means absorbing heat
This was supposedly an actual question given on a University of Washington Chemistry Mid-term exam, with the request to support one's answer with PROOF. Most all of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law...in which gas cools off when it expands...and heats up when compressed....or similar argument. ONE student wrote the following, and I have not been able to keep from making my own comments, so noted herein:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in TIME. So, we need to know the RATE that souls are moving into Hell....and the rate souls are leaving. It is obvious, therefore, that if souls are entering, then the mass of Hell is INcreasing, and if souls are leaving, the mass of Hell is DEcreasing. (note by Snowbum: I shall forego my gut instinct to treat souls versus bodies in a humorous fashion here).
Buttt.....it can be safely assumed that once a soul goes to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for how many souls are entering Hell, we need to look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some state that if you are NOT a Member of their religion, you WILL go to Hell. (Snowbum notes that Revelations is the source for Evangelic Christians to assume their particular interpretation of this).
Since there are more than one of these religions, and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that ALL people and ALL souls, will go to Hell, as they will be violating the laws of one religion or another.
Considering birth and death rates, we can therefore expect the number of souls in Hell to INcrease exponentially....or essentially double every few years.
We now must take a look at the RATE of CHANGE in the VOLUME in Hell. This is because Boyle's Law states that in order for temperature and pressure (here, meaning in Hell) to stay the same....then the volume of Hell must expand, as souls are added. This gives us TWO possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls are entering Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will INcrease until ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!
2. If Hell is ALREADY expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls already in Hell...plus those entering....then the temperature and pressure will DROP....until......ALL HELL FREEZES OVER!
So...which is it?
If we accept the postulate given to me by Ms. Therese Banyan during my freshman year that "...it will be a cold night in Hell before I sleep with you..."......and take into account the fact that I still have not succeeded in that area....then...(2) CANNOT be true....and...so....HELL IS EXOTHERMIC.
